Prototype - Galaxy Chess Set

An early Nick’s Knacks fabrication study combining a space-inspired chessboard with custom dimensional pieces and illustrated reverse artwork.

The board is constructed from two birch panels with alternating pearl-white and marbled galaxy acrylic inlays. Embedded magnets help align the sections during play, while the reverse features experimental artwork pairing Earth with a dramatic launch scene. The set includes the complete black-and-white 3D-printed iconic shuttle chess pieces shown.

This prototype helped establish the fabrication, inlay, magnetic alignment, and presentation methods being developed for future Nick’s Knacks game boards.

As an early prototype, this piece includes visible panel seams, minor alignment variation, 3D-print layer lines, and other small fabrication differences that would be refined in a finished production edition. Please review all photographs carefully.
